Waterproof Golf – Lightning Safety

Although it is extremely rare for someone to be killed by a lightning strike, it is very important to be aware of safety issues regarding lightning when playing golf. Golfers are particularly vulnerable to lightning strikes as they are out on exposed open land holding metal clubs.

Around 90 people are killed every year by lightning in the USA and according to NLSI (National Lightning Safety Institute) some 5% of anual USA lightning deaths and injuries happen on golf courses.

Safety Tips

Check the weather forecast before setting out

When you are out on the golf course be aware of any approaching dark clouds

Some golf courses use a warning sound, if you hear this head for cover

If a thunderstorm starts to develop you can use the 30/30 lightning rule (see below). Better still, at the first sign of a thunderstorm head for cover immediately

Go into the clubhouse or get into your car

Don’t wait for the rain before taking cover

Do NOT shelter under single trees or other tall structures

If you do get caught out in the open:

Seek lower ground (a valley)

Move away from your golf clubs and cart

If your shoes have metal spikes remove them

Stay away from water

If in a group, stand at least 15 feet apart

If you are caught in a lightning storm and you feel tingling or your hair begins to stand up, assume the lightning safety position. Crouch down with your feet together and your weight on the balls of your feet, put your hands on your forehead and elbows on knees.

30/30 Lightning Rule: If you hear thunder within 30 seconds of a lightning flash, take cover and remain there until 30 minutes after the last thunder clap.

GPS For Golf

Using a gps for golf is becoming quite popular with many golfers, providing maps and information about 1000’s of golf courses, and saving time out on the course by not having to look for markers or pace out distances.

A GPS (global positioning system) uses satellite technology which enables the golfer to determine the distance from their own position on the golf course to perhaps the front, middle, or back of the green, or to a bunker or water hazard.
They are hand held devices similar in size to a mobile phone with a touch screen display of information about the golf course on which you are playing. There will usually be lots of golf courses pre-loaded and thousands of others can be downloaded to be used in the gps.
Of course you need to be sure that the golf courses which you plan to play on are available for the gps, if not you could just get by with a rangefinder. Laser rangefinders can be used on any course as there is no information stored, you are just determining the distance to the target.
Mmm … gps or rangefinder?

GPS:
Small, light, very quick and easy to use, no line of sight needed, many features, individual course information, but there can be fees and downloading involved.
Rangefinder:
Very accurate, any target you wish, no fees or downloading involved, but gives distance only, takes longer and can be more difficult to use, and you need a line of sight to the target.

In the end it is just personal preference!

GPS systems and rangefinders are controversial pieces of kit in some golfing circles, many golfers believe that judging distance is part of the skill involved and as such shouldn’t be taken away from the game. Some golfers take the view that it is unsporting or even cheating, and that the game should be played without such devices.
Others are of the opinion that using a gps for golf saves time and basically just gives you information, and after all the gps isn’t actually playing the shot for you. Even if you do know the distance to the green, you still have to select the correct club and play the shot well enough.

A gps for golf is indeed a handy little gadget, small, lightweight, and easy to use; can even keep your score, … beats using a wet pencil!
