Around 90 people are killed every year by lightning in the USA and according to NLSI (National Lightning Safety Institute) some 5% of anual USA lightning deaths and injuries happen on golf courses.

Safety Tips

Check the weather forecast before setting out

When you are out on the golf course be aware of any approaching dark clouds

Some golf courses use a warning sound, if you hear this head for cover

If a thunderstorm starts to develop you can use the 30/30 lightning rule (see below). Better still, at the first sign of a thunderstorm head for cover immediately

• Go into the clubhouse or get into your car

• Don’t wait for the rain before taking cover

• Do NOT shelter under single trees or other tall structures
  
• If you do get caught out in the open: Seek lower ground (a valley)
  
• Move away from your golf clubs and cart If your shoes have metal spikes remove them
  
• Stay away from water If in a group, stand at least 15 feet apart
  
• If you are caught in a lightning storm and you feel tingling or your hair begins to stand up, assume the lightning safety position. Crouch down with your feet together and your weight on the balls of your feet, put your hands on your forehead and elbows on knees. 
• 30/30 Lightning Rule: If you hear thunder within 30 seconds of a lightning flash, take cover and remain there until 30 minutes after the last thunder clap.

Caps

In fine weather caps are great for keeping the sun out of your eyes and are probably the most popular type of head gear chosen by golfers. They are easily adjustable to be a snug fit , making them unlikely to fly off in windy conditions.

The main disadvantage of a cap, is it isn’t too great when it’s raining and you find water running down the back of your neck as you are addressing the ball. To combat this problem there are caps with twin peaks, one at the front and one at the back. The one at the back is at an angle that enables rain to run down it and over the collar; however if style is important maybe this one isn’t for you.

If you feel more comfortable in a cap even in wet weather, a waterproof single peak may suffice, as long as it keeps your head dry and the rain off your face then you’re happy enough.

Hats

A hat will generally offer more protection, whether it be from the sun or the rain. In really wet weather a wide brimmed hat might be more suitable, but bear in mind that  if it’s a windy day you could end up chasing it down the fairway!

There are many different types of hats to choose from and while style can be a major factor in the warm weather, will the same hat be waterproof if you get caught out on a rainy day?

Most folks go for the bucket style hats which offer decent protection and usually fit snuggly enough. Some wider brimmed hats have an extended brim at the back designed to allow rain to run off down the back of your jacket.

If the Cap Fits?

How do you know if the hat/cap will be a good fit if you’re buying it online? Well, if the one you choose is adjustable, which most caps are, then there’s more margin for error. If not you can measure your head with a tape and refer the measurements to a chart to get your hat size. If you find a tape awkward use a piece of string, then refer it to the tape measure. Most online hat stores will have a chart with measurements and corresponding hats sizes. You will need to measure the circumference of your head where the hat will rest, which will be the widest point from the back, above the ears around to the middle of the forehead.

Summary

Be it hat or cap, for golfers the priority is a clear view when you are taking a shot, and your view not to be obscured by either the sun in your eyes or the rain running down your face.

If you play in various weather conditions it is likely that you will own more than one hat or cap. One for rain, and a maybe a mesh breathable one for when it’s sunny and you need to keep cool.

Hats and caps are relatively inexpensive, so if the weather is pretty changeable where you live, have more than the one, so that no matter what the weather … you’ve got it covered!
